He was just a fan then, and like any good fan, he asked for a photo with a young Slovenian rider named Tadej Pogačar. Back then, Pogačar was an emerging talent, but Giulio had an inkling of bigger things to come. "This guy is going to be a star, take a picture with him too!" he urged his friend. But his friend passed on the opportunity. He still regrets it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:75%;"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/GOLJ_2_YEXYAALMFU_copy_24f2648e99.jpeg"></figure>&nbsp;Years later, that moment would come full circle as Giulio found himself racing against Pogačar in the Giro d’Italia - proof of how quickly the cycling world can turn admirers into competitors. Leading the breakaway into the final kilometre of the brutal Monte Pana, he fought to hold off the Slovenian star. It wasn’t enough. With 1,200 metres remaining, he was overtaken. But the moment was bigger than victory itself. He crossed the line, sought out the Maglia Rosa, and asked for his sunglasses. The request was simple. The result was unforgettable. He walked away with the glasses, a pink jersey, and a viral moment that cemented his arrival in professional cycling.&nbsp;&nbsp;That was the day the cycling world took notice. But Giulio's talent had been evident long before.&nbsp;Growing up in a small Apennine village,&nbsp;he was introduced to cycling by his father, who guided his early steps in the sport. Football briefly piqued his interest, but the mountains shaped him into a climber. His Gen Z haircut became as much a part of his image as his aggressive riding style.&nbsp;Though he was a promising junior, he was not an anointed prodigy. When Bardiani signed him as an 18-year-old in 2022, it wasn’t for instant results. It was for what he might become. And by 2023, that future was arriving fast. He won the final stage of the Tour de l'Avenir and finished second overall.&nbsp;His trajectory was undeniable.&nbsp;His debut Giro d’Italia in 2024, however, was a baptism by fire. Illness plagued his opening weeks. He suffered, but he refused to abandon. The youngest in the race,&nbsp;he threw himself into breakaways at every opportunity, attacking with the determination of a rider who knew that suffering was simply part of the process. And the process led him to Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe.&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:75%;"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/MF_250326_Vuelta_Catalunya_Stage3_258846_5d82e957f6.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;What happens next is unwritten. He dreams of winning the Tour de France. He has the mountains in his legs, the fire in his heart, and an open road ahead. He knows there is more to learn as he steps into&nbsp;the next chapter of his career, embracing the challenge of racing at the highest level. He might be a young rider, but he’s not one to be boxed in by data and rigid race plans.&nbsp;“I’m a GC rider. I like to ride by feel. When I feel good, I attack,” he says. “Of course, I follow the numbers, but I don’t let them dictate everything. I know it may sound a bit old school, but for me, this is the essence of cycling.”&nbsp;That spirit of instinctive racing is something he hopes to refine in his first year with Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe. This year is about absorption - gleaning wisdom from his teammates, the staff, and the new experiences that accompany life in a WorldTour team.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:75%;"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/MF_250326_Vuelta_Catalunya_Stage3_258853_bf50f17a30.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Already, he is confronting the gaps in his skill set. “After stage five of the Volta Catalunya, I can definitely say that I want to improve in the crosswinds!” he laughs. “And also time trialling - I never really trained specifically for it before I joined this team. But I have to say, I really enjoy it, and I’m looking forward to improving.”&nbsp;Beyond the racing, he’s adjusting to the dynamics of a truly international squad for the first time in his career. His previous teams were tight-knit, all-Italian outfits, but now he’s surrounded by riders and staff from across the world.&nbsp;“One of the biggest differences between here and my previous team is the resources and the scale and size of everything,” he explains. “But they both still feel like family. Before, I was in a small Italian family. Now, I’m in a big international family. I’m still learning everyone’s names!”&nbsp;Of course, there’s one particular lesson that’s proving to be more challenging than race craft or crosswinds.&nbsp;“The biggest thing I’ve learned here?” he grins. “English! I know you were expecting me to say something about cycling, but really, I’m improving my English every day. In recent weeks particularly with Frederik Wandahl. I was with him on Teide and at Volta Catalunya, and his English is really good, so I hope it’s rubbing off on me!”&nbsp;Despite the cultural shift, Giulio has found familiar faces to guide him. The Italian contingent within the team - Gianni Moscon, Matteo Sobrero, Giovanni Aleotti, and his coach, Paolo Artuso – has helped him settle in.&nbsp;He’s also surrounded by riders he once idolised.&nbsp;“The teammate I look up to the most, without question, is Primož. He’s one of the best riders in the world. I love his winning mentality and his focus. It’s a really admirable quality.”&nbsp;Asked whether he considers Roglič a teammate, a friend, or a mentor, he smiles knowingly. “He’s all three rolled into one. Now I see him as a real person. Before, I saw him as Roglič,&nbsp;but now I see him as Primož.”&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:75%;"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/MF_250326_Vuelta_Catalunya_Stage3_258908_1_8db03d28a5.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;With riders like Primož to learn from, Giulio’s ambitions have only grown. It’s really hard, and if you don’t enjoy what you do, it makes it that much harder. Pogačar war damals ein Talent mit Potenzial, doch Giulio hatte eine Vorahnung. „Dieser Typ wird ein Star, mach ein Foto mit ihm!" drängte er seinen Freund. Doch der lehnte ab. Heute bereut er es.&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:75%;"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/GOLJ_2_YEXYAALMFU_copy_c53d12a744.jpeg"></figure>&nbsp;Jahre später schloss sich der Kreis, als Giulio sich plötzlich im Rennen gegen Pogačar beim Giro d’Italia wiederfand – ein Beweis dafür, wie schnell der Radsport Bewunderer in Konkurrenten verwandeln kann. In der Fluchtgruppe kämpfte er auf den letzten, gnadenlosen Metern zum Monte Pana darum, den Slowenen hinter sich zu lassen. Es reichte nicht. 1.200 Meter vor dem Ziel wurde er eingeholt. Doch dieser Moment war größer als ein Sieg. Nach der Ziellinie suchte er das Maglia Rosa auf und fragte nach seiner Sonnenbrille – eine kleine Geste mit großem Echo. Er ging mit der Brille, einem rosa Trikot und einem viralen Moment davon, der seinen Einzug in die Profi-Szene markierte.&nbsp;An diesem Tag richtete sich der Blick der Radsportwelt auf ihn. Doch sein Talent war lange zuvor erkennbar gewesen.&nbsp;Aufgewachsen in einem kleinen Dorf in den Apenninen, fand Giulio Pellizzari durch seinen Vater zum Radsport. Kurz flirtete er mit dem Fußball, doch die Berge prägten ihn zum Kletterer. Sein markanter Gen-Z-Haarschnitt wurde ebenso sein Markenzeichen wie sein instinktiver, unerschrockener Fahrstil. Doch er ist kein Fahrer, der sich in Zahlen und starre Rennpläne zwängen lässt.&nbsp;„Ich bin ein Klassementfahrer. Ich fahre nach Gefühl. Wenn ich mich gut fühle, attackiere ich", sagt er. „Natürlich folge ich den Zahlen, aber ich lasse sie nicht alles bestimmen. Ich weiß, das ist ein bisschen altmodisch, aber für mich ist das die Essenz des Radsports."&nbsp;Diesen Instinkt zu verfeinern, ist eines seiner Hauptziele in seinem ersten Jahr bei Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe. 2025 ist für ihn ein Jahr des Lernens – von Teamkollegen, Betreuern und den Erfahrungen, die das Leben in einem WorldTour-Team mit sich bringt.&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:75%;"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/MF_250326_Vuelta_Catalunya_Stage3_258853_954d6e50f2.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Und er stellt sich bereits den Lücken in seinem Skillset. „Nach der fünften Etappe der Volta Catalunya kann ich definitiv sagen, dass ich mich in Seitenwind-Situationen verbessern möchte!" lacht er. „Und auch im Zeitfahren – ich habe davor nie wirklich spezifisch dafür trainiert. Aber ich muss sagen, es macht mir richtig Spaß, und ich freue mich darauf, besser zu werden."&nbsp;Neben den Herausforderungen auf dem Rad gewöhnt er sich an die Dynamik eines internationalen Teams. Seine bisherigen Mannschaften waren eng verbundene, rein italienische Gruppen. Nun ist er von Fahrern aus aller Welt umgeben.&nbsp;„Einer der größten Unterschiede hier ist die Größe und die Ressourcen des Teams", erklärt er. „Aber trotzdem fühlt es sich wie eine Familie an. Vorher war ich in einer kleinen italienischen Familie. Jetzt bin ich in einer großen internationalen Familie. Ich lerne immer noch die Namen aller!"&nbsp;Doch eine Herausforderung ist größer als jede Taktik oder jedes Training.&nbsp;„Das Größte, was ich hier gelernt habe?" Er grinst. „Englisch! Ich weiß, du hast erwartet, dass ich etwas über den Radsport sage, aber wirklich, ich verbessere mein Englisch jeden Tag. Besonders in den letzten Wochen mit Frederik Wandahl – ich war mit ihm auf dem Teide und bei der Volta Catalunya, und sein Englisch ist richtig gut. Ich hoffe, dass etwas davon auf mich abfärbt!"&nbsp;&nbsp;Trotz der kulturellen Umstellung gibt es vertraute Gesichter, die ihn unterstützen. Die italienische Fraktion im Team – Gianni Moscon, Matteo Sobrero, Giovanni Aleotti und sein Coach Paolo Artuso – hilft ihm, sich einzufinden.&nbsp;Er ist zudem umgeben von Fahrern, die er einst bewunderte.&nbsp;„Mein Vorbild im Team? Nun rückt er diesem Traum näher. Doch Giulio bleibt geerdet.&nbsp;„Habt Spaß am Radsport. Nehmt ihn nicht zu ernst. Es ist ein harter Sport, und wenn ihr ihn nicht genießt, wird er noch härter. Junge Fahrer sind heute sehr fokussiert, aber sie sollten die Liebe zum Sport hinter all den Zahlen nicht verlieren."&nbsp;Diese Liebe ist es, die ihn antreibt. Primož delivered an imposing performance on the slopes of Montserrat to take both the stage victory and the leader’s jersey on Stage 4 of the Volta a Catalunya. Just like yesterday, the stage was decided in a tight two-up battle, but this time it was Primož who outsprinted Juan Ayuso, securing his first win of the season.&nbsp;The 188.7km stage from Sant Vicenç de Castellet to Montserrat provided a challenging test for the peloton, with a final ascent to the historic Montserrat Monastery. The 9km climb, with an average gradient of 6 percent, is one of the most iconic finishes in the Volta a Catalunya. Primož positioned himself well throughout the day, picking up valuable bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint in Manresa, which helped close the gap to Ayuso in the overall standings. As the peloton tackled the final climb, the high pace shattered the group, leaving only the strongest contenders to fight out the win. With 2.5km remaining, Ayuso launched a stinging attack, but Roglič responded swiftly, bridging across to set up a tense final sprint. This time, it was the Slovenian who had the edge, powering past Ayuso in the final meters to claim victory.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img></figure>&nbsp;Speaking at the finish, Primož is optimistic about the albeit tough course still to come at the race:&nbsp;<blockquote>“It’s always nice to win. For sure it was a hard stage, with a fast tempo right from the start. But luckily I had something left at the end to get to the line first! I was at camp and put in some good training. I’ve been away from my family for quite a few weeks, and came straight to the race, so I’ve had to make sacrifices in that respect. So it’s good that it’s brought some rewards at the race. Ich war im Trainingslager und habe viel gearbeitet. Ich war einige Wochen von meiner Familie getrennt und bin direkt ins Rennen gestartet – da musste ich gewisse Opfer bringen. Umso schöner ist es, dass sich diese Mühen jetzt auszahlen. Der Kurs, der noch vor uns liegt, wird nicht leichter, aber im Moment läuft es gut und wir sind in einer starken Position. Primož Roglič almost had victory within his grasp on Stage 3 of the Volta a Catalunya, finishing second in a photo finish sprint to the summit at La Molina. The Slovenian launched his sprint early, but was narrowly edged out in the final meters by Juan Ayuso, who claimed the stage win by the smallest of margins.&nbsp;The 218.6-kilometre stage, featuring a gruelling 4,700 meters of altitude gain, culminated in a tense battle between the general classification contenders. Red Bull BORA-hansgrohe played their part in controlling the pace on the final ascent, ensuring Primož was well-positioned for the decisive moments of the stage. As the last attackers were swept up inside the final 500 meters, Primož surged ahead with 200 meters remaining.&nbsp;For a moment, it seemed he had done enough to take the win, yet Ayuso responded with a powerful acceleration on the inside, drawing level and just managing to inch ahead at the line. The finish was so close that it required a photo finish, with Primož settling for second on the line.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/Getty_Images_2207028135_c70522afaa.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Despite the near miss, the result reinforced his form as he continues to build momentum in the race. He now moves to second place overall, at six seconds behind Ayuso in the general classification. With several decisive mountain stages still ahead, the squad remains focused on the upcoming stages.&nbsp;At the finish line, Primož took the result in stride, reflecting on the stage as he waited for the result of the photo finish:&nbsp;<blockquote>“How did it go? Well,&nbsp;we don’t know the result yet.&nbsp;But in the end, regardless of the result, whether I was&nbsp;first or second, I felt good. The guys were strong.&nbsp;There’s also a ski jump&nbsp;somewhere behind us, which is&nbsp;always nice. Nun, wir wissen das Ergebnis noch nicht. Aber am Ende, egal ob Erster oder Zweiter, ich habe mich gut gefühlt. Die Jungs waren stark.
